Another one of the original thirteen colonies, Rhode Island is known for its unusual name and small size. Ironically, the history of Rhode Island's name is unclear. It could have either come from explorer Giovani da Verrazzano or the Dutch phrase "een rodlich Eylande." Both potential naming stories relate to Rhode Island's rocky shoreline. Naming controversy aside, Rhode Island has a lot to offer visitors–even if it has the smallest area in the country.
If you ever get to Rhode Island, check out their state capitol building which has the world's fourth largest self-supporting marble dome. The cities Newport and Providence also have a number of historic mansions to see. Finally, there is the nature of Rhode Island, which includes shoreline and forests. And don't forget about their temperate climate. You just have to ignore the mosquitoes and rodents that also enjoy the state's beautiful scenery and weather.
